Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2026
The short version
We don't store your prompts or AI responses. Your data stays on your machine. BYOK traffic never touches our servers.
What We Collect
Account Information:
- Email address (for account and billing)
- Payment information (processed by Stripe; we don't store card numbers)
Usage Metrics:
- Number of requests (for billing and rate limiting)
- Timestamps of requests
- Model and provider used
- Token counts
We do NOT collect:
- Your prompts or queries
- AI responses
- Contents of piped data
- Your files or directory contents
- Shell history
How Data Flows
Using linuxtoaster's managed service:
Your request goes: toast → toastd → linuxtoaster.com → AI provider → back to you. We see metadata (token counts, model used) but not content.
Using BYOK (Bring Your Own Key):
Your request goes: toast → toastd → AI provider directly. Traffic never touches our servers. We only know that a request was made (for rate limiting), not what it contained.
Using local models (Ollama/MLX):
Your request never leaves your machine. Zero data sent anywhere.
Local Storage
linuxtoaster stores data locally on your machine:
~/.ssh/toast.*— SSH keys for use with LinuxToaster.Com.crumbs— Project context files (you create these).chat— Conversation history (optional).persona— Custom Slice definitions
This data never leaves your machine unless you explicitly share it.
Third-Party Services
We use:
- Stripe — Payment processing
- AI Providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc. (see their privacy policies)
When you use an AI provider through our service, your prompts are sent to that provider and subject to their data policies.
Data Retention
- Account data: Retained while your account is active
- Usage metrics: Retained for 90 days for billing reconciliation
- Payment records: Retained as required by law
Your Rights
You can:
- Request a copy of your account data
- Delete your account and associated data
- Export your local data at any time (it's just files)
Security
See our Security page for details on how we protect your data.
Changes
We'll notify you of significant changes to this policy via email or in-app notice.
